NORFOLK, Va. - Old Dominion got a season-high five goals from senior Ashley Kellogg and scored four of the games final five goals, but No. 11 Towson held off a valiant effort from the Lady Monarchs in a 13-11 Tigers victory Friday evening at the Powhatan Sports Complex.
After stopping a then season-high 17 shots Sunday against Hofstra, sophomore goalkeeper Sarah Geary registered a new season-high with 18 saves against the Tigers. The combined 35 saves are the most in a two-game span in Geary's career.
Senior Saratu Dodo and sophomore Sarah Wright each contributed two goals for the Lady Monarchs, while sophomore Lisa Bernardini dished out a game-high three assists.
Despite playing one of its best games of the year, Old Dominion falls to 2-9 overall and 0-3 in Colonial Athletic Association play. Towson improves to 9-3 on the year and 3-1 in league action.
Old Dominion got on the board first in a back-and-forth first half that saw the score tied on four separate occasions. The Lady Monarchs got goals from Dodo and sophomore Rebecca Hartrum within the first 10 minutes to lead early.
Dodo had two scores in the opening period and her second tally tied the game at four with 9:26 remaining in the stanza. Towson scored three consecutive goals to lead 7-4, but a Kellogg score with just 23 seconds remaining cut the Tigers lead to two entering the intermission.
Just 35 seconds into the second half, Wright posted her second score to get ODU to within 7-6. Towson scored five of the next six goals though to create some separation. A Hillary Fratzke goal at the 17:21 mark put the Tigers up 12-7.
The Lady Monarchs didn't go away quietly though as senior Nicole McMahon and Kellogg each scored in a two-minute span to pull ODU back to within three (12-9).
A Fratzke goal boosted the Tigers lead but Kellogg tallied another score at the 7:36 mark to get Old Dominion back to within three once again.
Kellogg's fifth goal of the day cut the Towson lead to 13-11, but the Tigers won the ensuing draw control and didn't allow the Lady Monarchs to gain possession on Towson's side of the field for the remaining 1:33.
Old Dominion will continue its three-game homestand on Sunday against Delaware at 1 p.m.
