Football Monarchs Volunteer With Special Olympics Photo Gallery
NORFOLK, Va. -- Twenty-one members of the Old Dominion football team took time out of their busy schedules to spent time volunteering with Special Olympics on campus on Tuesday morning. Members of the team joined students from the therapeutic recreation program from the university to a host approximately 90 children, ages 6-11, from Norfolk Public Schools.
Special Olympics is a year-round program of sports training and athletic competition for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. Norfolk is perhaps one of the oldest Special Olympics programs within the area and serves roughly 150 active athletes and serves as a host city for many local and area events.
The day's activities featured six medal events, including 50-meter walk/run, softball throw, standing long jump, hula-hoop toss, basketball shooting and T-ball hitting, as well as 12 skill events which featured obstacle course, soccer kick, weightlifting, beanbag toss, fitness, bowling, corn hole, hockey, track, ladder ball, jump rope and "eye toy." The participants were also able to take part in therapeutic recreation games between the events.
