FAIRFAX, VA--Chris Cook's two out single which scored Dan Palumbo capped off a five-run rally as George Mason (18-11/4-5) defeated Old Dominion, 8-7 Sunday afternoon. ODU is now 15-21/4-5.
In the ninth Dan Palumbo doubled to score Mark Hill and Ryan Soares to cut the ODU lead to 7-6. With the bases loaded, pinch hitter Josh Steinberg's sacrifice fly scored Anthony Montefusco to tie the game setting up Cook's game winner.
ODU scored in the first inning when Donnie Corsner (Virginia Beach, Va.) doubled, then came home on a Chris Baker (Chesapeake, VA.) double.
In the second inning, John Malbon (Virginia Beach, Va.) doubled home Josh Wright (Bridgewater, Va.),
Kenny Stoneback (Colonial Heights, VA.) singled home Malbon, then Edgar Hernandez (Puerto Rico) doubled home both Stoneback and Corsner.
Kenny Stoneback hit a two-run homer in the top of the eighth, his fourth of the season with John Malbon aboard.
George Mason got on the board in the fifth inning with two outs, when Jeremy Haas singled home Chris Cook. Dan Palombo hit his first homerun of the season in the sixth.
Donnie Corsner, John Malbon and Kenny Stoneback each had two hits for ODU, while Hernandez and Stoneback each had two RBI. Dan Palumbo knocked in three runs for Mason while Jeremy Haas and Ryan Soares each had three hits for the Patriots.
The Monarchs return to action Tuesday night when they host Norfolk State at 6 p.m.
