HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. - Sophomore goalkeeper Sarah Geary registered a season-high 17 saves and senior attacker Ashley Kellogg had a game-high tying four goals, but Old Dominion fell 16-8 at No. 16 Hofstra Sunday afternoon.
Geary's 17 saves are the second most of her career, only trailing the 19 she made at St. Joseph's on March 21, 2009. Sophomore Lisa Bernardini scored a pair of goals and dished out three assists for a five-point day.
Hofstra moves to 8-3 overall and 2-0 in the CAA, while the Lady Monarchs drop their sixth straight to fall to 2-8 on the year and 0-2 in the league.
For the fifth straight game, Old Dominion fell behind early, this time going down 3-0 after only 1:14 of play. Senior Nicole McMahon stopped the Pride run with the Lady Monarchs' first goal of the day at the 26:12 mark.
Hofstra started to pull away from that point on, going on a 5-1 run after the McMahon score to go up 8-2. ODU showed signs of a comeback late in the first half though as Bernardini tallied a goal and assisted on another, cutting the Pride lead to four (8-4).
Hofstra's Ashley Jones registered her third goal of the opening half with only eight second remaining to give the Pride a 9-4 halftime lead.
The Lady Monarchs started the second half in a much better fashion than the first, getting goals from both Bernardini and Kellogg to trim the Hofstra lead to 9-6.
Defensively ODU was much better to start the new period as well, holding the Pride scoreless for over 12 minutes.
The balanced Hofstra offense would begin to take over from that point on though. The Pride scored seven of the next nine goals, with each score coming from a different player.
A K'Leigh Vanaman tally with under two minutes to play gave Hofstra its largest lead of the day, 16-8, which was also the final score.
The Pride outshot the Lady Monarchs 41-25 and won 20 of the 26 draw controls. Jones led the Pride with four scores on the day.
The Lady Monarchs now return Norfolk for a three-game homestand starting on April 16 against No. 8 Towson. The game will get underway at 7 p.m. at the Powhatan Sports Complex.
