NORFOLK, VA-- ODU junior lefthander Kyle Hald (Springfield, Va.) scattered nine hits with 10 strikeouts to lead the Monarchs to a 3-1 victory over Rutgers Friday night. ODU is now 11-10 overall.
Hald runs his record to 4-1 on the season. Senior shortstop Chris Buss (Rosemount, MN.) and sophomore outfielder Kenny Stoneback (Colonial Heights, VA.) each had three hits on the evening.
ODU tied the game in the fifth as Kenny Stoneback doubled home Chris Buss. In the sixth inning, Buss singled home pinchrunner Brent Frazier (Fairfax Stations, Va.) to put ODU in the lead for good and Buss was then plated on a single by senior outfielder Cameron Scott (Culpeper, VA.).
Rutgers took a 1-0 lead in the first as Jarren Matthews singled home Steve Nyisztor. Hald then held the Scarlet Knights scoreless the rest of the way. This is the third time this season he fanned 10 or more batters in a game.
Hald now has a 2.61 earned run average with 42 strikeouts in 38 innings of work.The two teams play Saturday at 4 p.m.
