NORFOLK, Va. -- Junior Nathan Hartman (Orlando, Fla.) used a sac fly to left with in the eighth inning to help life the Old Dominion baseball team to a 3-2 victory over in-state rival Richmond.
The victory snaps a four-game losing streak and improves the Monarchs to 10-10 on the year. Richmond meanwhile falls to 8-7 overall.
Senior lefthander Cory Toth (Chincoteague, Va.) picked up the win for the Monarchs improving to 2-0 on the year. Sophomore righty Phil McCarthy (Chesapeake, Va.) earned his second save of the 2010 season allowing just one hit and striking out a pair of Spider batters in the ninth. Richmond's Jay Joines earned the loss dropping his record to 0-1.
Richmond opened scoring in the top of the third. Andrew Lowry opened the inning with a single and after the Spiders recorded two outs, the Richmond centerfield reached home on a Barber single to right.
The Spiders went up 2-0 in the fourth. Phil Ruzbarsky doubled to right field and two batters later gave Richmond its second run of the evening after being sent home on a Lowery single through the right side.
Old Dominion finally lit up the scoreboard with their next turn at-bat. The bottom of the fourth saw the inning open with Josh Wright (Bridgewater, Va.) doubling through the left side and scoring the Monarchs' first run off a Jake McAloose (Va. Beach, Va.) single up the middle.
It was then another late inning comeback for the Monarchs. After Kenny Stoneback led off by striking out, Cameron Scott (Culpeper, Va.) and Wright put together back-to-back singles to put ODU runners on first and second. McAloose then came to the plate and singled through the left side to score Cameron from second. Two batters later Wright found himself reaching home on Hartman's sacrifice fly to left for the game-winning run. For Hartman, it was his team-leading 24th RBI of the season.
Wright finished the game going 2-of-3 from the plate with a pair of runs. McAloose went 3-of-4 with two RBIs.
The ODU baseball team returns to action on Friday, March 19th opening a three-game series with Rutgers. First pitch against the Scarlet Knights is 7:00 p.m.
