HARRISONBURG, VA-- Three Monarchs (19-7/11-3)scored in double figures led by Gerald Lee's 18 as the Monarchs defeated James Madison, 64-44 in CAAplay. ODU has now held 11 opponents under 50 points this year.
With the win, the Monarchs remain tied for second with George Mason in the CAA standings.
JMU hit 8 of 23 treys when the two teams last met on Jan. 6, but the ODU defense led by Kent Bazemore and Ben Finney held the Dukes to just one trey in 12 attempts tonight.
Lee led all scorers with 18 points, while Ben Finney added 11 points and Darius James 12. ODU dominated the boards, 41-30 as Frank Hassell hauled down nine rebounds, followed by Keyon Carterwith seven, Gerald Lee and Marsharee Neeely with six.
Hassell, who leads the team in rebounding has hauled down six or more rebounds in eight of his last ten games.
For the game, the Monarchs shot .448 (26-58) from the field and hit .438 (7-16) from three point range.JMU shot .327 (16-49) and committed 12 turnovers with only nine assists.
Back-to-back buckets from Frank Hassell and Darius James broke a six-all tie to an 11-5 lead with 11:46 left in the first half.
ODU jumped out to a 40-21 halftime lead as both Lee and Finney scored 11 points each. In the first half Ben Finney was three for five in treys as ODU hit .515 (17-33) from the field and 5-10 for50 percent from beyond the arc. The Monarchs also took care of the ball with only four first half turnovers, and 11 for the game. Darius James dished out four assists and Frank Hassell blocked two shots.
The Monarchs biggest lead was 24 at the 13:39 mark, 51-27.
The Dukes were led byDenzel Bowles who was the only one in double figures with 14 points and ten rebounds.
The Monarchs return home to host the Patriots of George Mason Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m. in theTed Constant Convocation Center. ODU ranks fifth nationally in home court winning streak with 20.At haltime, ODU Hall of Famer and two-time CAA Player of the Year, Odell Hodge will have his jersey retired.
