BOSTON, Mass. - Senior Gerald Lee scored 16 points to lead four Monarchs in double-figures, but hot first half three-point shooting propelled Northeastern to a 74-64 Colonial Athletic Association victory over Old Dominion Saturday evening at Matthews Arena.
The loss snapped an eight-game win streak for the Monarchs and moves ODU and NU into a tie for second place in the CAA.
Junior's Keyon Carter and Frank Hassell tallied 13 points and pulled down seven rebounds each, while classmate Ben Finney was the fourth Monarch in double-figures with 12 points.
Old Dominion (17-6, 9-2 CAA) outrebounded the Huskies 34-21, but NU shot 59.5 percent from the floor (25-of-42) to snap the Monarchs streak of six straight games holding opponents under 36-percent from the field.
Northeastern (14-8, 9-2), which has won 12 of its last 13 games, was led Chaisson Allen and Matt Janning who combined for 36 points.
Northeastern raced out to an 18-8 lead behind hot three-point shooting from Janning. The Monarchs cut the lead to as little as four (25-21) on a Carter triple at the 7:44 mark. Carter had nine points for ODU in the opening stanza.
The Huskies increased their lead to as many as 15 as they shot 57.7 percent from the field and 66.7 percent from beyond the arc in the first period. Nkem Ojougboh drilled a triple at the halftime buzzer to sent Northeastern into the intermission with a 42-27 lead.
After allowing eight three-point field goals in the first half, ODU relinquished only one in the second half. The Monarchs stormed back and after a Lee traditional three-point play, Old Dominion trailed by only six (52-46).
Northeastern quickly got its lead back to double-digits, going on a 6-0 run in which Janning capped it with a lay-in to make it 58-46 with just over eight minutes remaining. The Monarchs could get no closer than eight the rest of the way.
Old Dominion will next be in action on Wednesday, Feb. 3 against the William & Mary Tribe. The contest is set to tip at 7 p.m. from the Ted Constant Convocation Center, a venue where ODU has won 19 consecutive games. The home winning streak ranks as the sixth longest in the nation.
