CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. -- The Old Dominion women's rowing team won the Freshman Novice 8+ at the 2009 Head of the Hooch on the Tennessee River this weekend.
The Novice 8+ boat rowed to a first place time of 14:50.4, nearly six seconds ahead of the Clemson shell.
"Winning the Frosh event by six seconds over a team as big and deep as Clemson bodes well for our develpment and our future," said head coach Heather Weisel of her squad's performance.
In the Women's Frosh 4+ race, the Lady Monarchs claimed fourth place in the field. ODU rowed to a time of 17:09.7, with Clemson crossing the finish line in first with their time of 16:34.0, followed by boats from Duke and Tulsa.
ODU had two shells entered in the both the Women's Champion 4+ and Women's Open 8+.
The first Lady Monarch boat to finish the field of 40 in the Women's Champion 4+ took 18th in the race clocking in with a time of 16:42.3, while the ODU "B" boat took 25th with its time of 17:16.9.
In the Women's Open 8+, the Lady Monarchs "A" rowers took seventh recording a time of 15:02.7, while the ODU "B" boat captured 17th with a time of 16:20.1
"The 4+'s were tough because we have spent no time in them at all," noted Weisel. "We just want to race everytime we can for the experience so it was worth it. But to have the Open 8 come back with a #7 finish beating all the Tennesee boats again, being as large and deep as they are, with a lineup of all sophomores was really big for us! The B boat made up of four ice cold novices and four sophomores cruising through some boats was great race experience."
The Old Dominion women's rowing team hits the water again next week at the Rivanna Romp in Charlottesville.
"We're showing some signs of developing speed," Weisel says of the future. "At the Varsity level we need more full on race experience just like this to learn how to race like teams full of juniors and seniors. It will come and this is a solid step in that direction."
