NORFOLK, Va. - The Old Dominion field hockey team concluded the 2009 regular season with a 5-3 victory over Colonial Athletic Association foe William & Mary on senior day at the Powhatan Sports Complex Sunday afternoon.
Senior Kathleen Shea (Elizaville, N.Y.) netted a pair of goals to pace the Lady Monarchs. ODU never trailed in the contest and totaled a season-high 28 shots.
The Lady Monarchs end the regular season with a 9-11 overall record and a 5-3 mark in the CAA. The Tribe fall to 6-12 on the year and 2-5 in league play.
Old Dominion got off to a hot start, scoring the games first three goals. Freshman Julie Hodge (Downingtown, Pa.) netted the first goal of the game and her first career tally off a penalty stroke just four minutes into the contest.
Shea and sophomore Kathryn Kirk (Lititz, Pa.) scored consecutive goals to put ODU up 3-0. Both scores came off rebounds that were corralled in front of the cage.
ODU's lead was cut to 3-1 at halftime, but Shea's second goal of the day and eighth of the season reestablished the Lady Monarch's three-goal advantage. William & Mary's Erica Eng would score a pair of goals in the second half, but the Tribe could get no closer than two the rest of the way.
Sophomore Rachel Stream (Poolesville, Md.) also scored in the game and senior Katie Ueberroth (Stevens, Pa.) added an assist. Ueberroth ends the regular season with a team-high 12 assists.
After the game, ODU's four seniors were honored. Goalkeeper Kelly Driscoll (West Chester, Pa.), Shea, Ueberroth and back Hanna Warren (Green Lane, Pa.) all played their final home game Sunday. Driscoll made four saves for the Lady Monarchs, to push her CAA leading total to 120 saves this season.
Old Dominion is currently tied with Hofstra for fourth place in the CAA standings. The Lady Monarch will find out if they qualify for the CAA Tournament after both James Madison and Northeastern wrap up their regular season slate.
