NORFOLK, Va. - Senior goalkeeper Kelly Driscoll (West Chester, Pa.) made a game-high seven saves and held a potent North Carolina offense to only two goals, but the Lady Monarchs fell to the second-ranked Tar Hells, 2-0, at the Powhatan Sports Complex Saturday afternoon in non-conference field hockey action.
North Carolina, which held an edge in both shots (18-9) and corners (11-4), rebounded after its first lost of the season last week. The Tar Heels improve to 16-1, while the Lady Monarchs fall to 8-11.
ODU, which had won back-to-back contests entering the game, will now set its focus on obtaining a CAA Tournament bid. The Lady Monarchs host William & Mary on Sunday at 1 p.m. in a must-win game.
The lone goal of the first half came when UNC's Charlotte Verstraten dribbled past an ODU defender and struck a shot from five yards out that found the back of the cage. The Tar Heels outshot the Lady Monarchs 12-5 in the opening stanza and held a 1-0 advantage at the half.
In the 50th minute, UNC would double its lead as Elizabeth Stephens scored a goal off a Jen Slocum assist. ODU would have a few late opportunities, but could not find the back of the cage.
Seniors Alyschia Conn (Peach Bottom, Pa.) and Kathleen Shea (Elizaville, N.Y.) led ODU with a pair of shots each.
Sunday's regular season finale against the Tribe will be the final home contest for four ODU seniors.
