NORFOLK, Va. -- The College of William & Mary (12-7-0, 6-5-0) won a 2-0 decision against Old Dominion University (7-8-5, 3-4-4) today, bringing the 2009 season to an end for the Lady Monarchs. The six seniors of the 2009 class were honored in a pre-game ceremony prior to their final match.
The Tribe jumped ahead just 8:29 into the game, as defender Diana Weigel found space in the corner to send a cross into the box. Danielle Axenfield got a head on it, sending it past rookie goalkeeper Laura Bush into the right side of the goal.
Old Dominion got three shots on goal in the first half, but were unable to capitalize and went into the break down 1-0. Bush played the first half, saving one shot and allowing the one goal.
In the second half, the Tribe managed to keep ODU off the board again, even as the Lady Monarchs offense picked up steam. ODU took nine shots in the second half, with the best chance coming off a cross from sophomore Kaylee Scholl to the foot of Victoria Johnson. Johnson's shot in the box was snared by William & Mary's keeper, Grace Barnard, who made four saves in preserving the clean sheet.
The defense slipped just once in the second half, allowing only two shots on goal and just one score. The second goal of the match came in the 68th minute as Mallory Schaffer found Erin Liberatore streaking toward the top of the box. Liberatore put her shot over Alvarado's outstretched arm and into the crossbar, where it deflected in for the insurance goal.
ODU outshot William & Mary 14-9 in the game, but each team put four on frame. Rookie Aubrie Ewell led the way for ODU with three shots, including one on-goal while Krissy Vornadore paced the Tribe attack with four shots, including a pair on net.
The Lady Monarchs season concludes with a final overall record of 7-8-5, including a CAA mark of 3-4-4.
