RICHMOND, Va. - Senior Kathleen Shea (Elizaville, N.Y.) tallied two goals and the Old Dominion field hockey stepped up its defensive effort in a 3-0 Colonial Athletic Association win over Virginia Commonwealth Friday evening at Cary Street Field in Richmond.
The shutout was ODU's first of the season as the Lady Monarchs improve to 7-10 overall and even their CAA mark at 3-3. VCU falls to 8-8 on the year and 1-5 in league play.
Sophomore Rachel Stream (Poolesville, Md.) started the scoring just seven minutes into the contest. She took advantage of a penalty corner by blasting a shot off Hanna Warren's (Green Lane, Pa.) stop to net her sixth goal of the season.
Just 25 seconds later, Shea put ODU up 2-0 as the senior's sliding push shot went past the VCU keeper on the ground to the post.
The Lady Monarchs put the game out of reach three minutes into the second half as Shea registered her second goal of the contest off a Samantha Richardson (Surrey, B.C. Canada) feed. Richardson's pass was the second off a penalty corner and the shot went from the top right of the circle to the far corner.
Lady Monarch goalkeeper Kelly Driscoll (West Chester, Pa.) made five saves and posted her 25th career collegiate shutout in the win.
Old Dominion will play its final road game of the season on Sunday, traveling to No. 9 James Madison. The game, ODU's eighth against a Top 10 opponent this season, will get under way at 1 p.m.
