NORFOLK, Va. -- ODU got wins from three players at the 2009 ITA/Wilson Men's Atlantic Regional Championships today, and a fourth advanced with a first round bye. ODU also saw Yakov Diskin and Krzysztof Muzalewski advance to the round of 16 in doubles action on Thursday.
Diskin and Muzalewski earned a first round with over Virginia Tech's Tripimir Kujundvic and Jon Pine by a final score of 8-5. Then, in a 5:00 p.m. matchup against Navy's Owen Bullard and Eddie Konrad, the Monarch tandem won an 8-4 match. Diskin and Muzalewski are set to play in the Round of 16 against the top-seeded pairing from the University of Virginia, Houston Barrick and Sanam Singh. Barrick and Sing narrowly escaped an upset in the second round as Temple's Filip Rams and Kacper Rams stretched the Cavaliers to a 9-8 (5) final.
In singles action, both Diskin and Muzalewski advanced with victories, as did transfer Benjamin Chomette. Diskin handed Kujundvic a singles loss to go with the doubles setback, defeating the Hokie player 6-0, 6-2. He will face Jamie Whiteford from William & Mary at 8:00 a.m. Friday morning.
Muzalewski's victory in singles play came over Penn State's C.J. Griffin, taking three sets. After dropping the first, 4-6, the ODU sophomore won the next two 6-2, 6-3. He will now face the third seeded Yoann Re from Virginia Tech on Friday at 9:00 a.m.
Chomette won in straight sets over Georgetown's Brian Miller, 6-3, 6-2. He is scheduled to play Filip Rams from Temple at 1:00 p.m. on Friday. ODU junior Tobias Fanselow also advanced to the Round of 64 with a first round bye and will face Virginia's Milo Johnson at 1:00 p.m. Friday afternoon. The only ODU setback on Thursday was Alfredo Rodriguez' loss to VCU's Camill Salomon, 6-3, 6-1.
