NORFOLK, VA--Yannick Smith (Hillsborough, NJ.), Steffen Rabben (Valdres, Norway)and Nane Joseph (Yaounde, Cameroon) each scored a goal to liftThe Monarchs (7-3-1/2-2-1) to a 3-1 Colonial Athletic Association win over Georgia State (3-5-1/1-4) Wednesday night.
Smith, a freshman froward put the Monarchs up seven minutes into the match after getting A pass from senior midfielder Bobby Foglesong(Fredericksburg, Va.).
The Panthers tied the match midway in the first half when Gimel Gordon headed in a cross from Brett Cummins.
In the second half, junior forward Steffen Rabben headed a Shane Howard pass into the net to put the Monarchs up for good at 2-1. With a little more than seven minutes left in the match senior midfielder Nane Joseph scored on a penalty kick.
ODU outshot the Panthers, 22-6. GSU's goalkeeper Vincent Foermer came jp with eight saves, while ODU's Evan Newton (Virginia Beach, Va.) had two.
Rabben and Joseph are tied for the team scoring lead, both have four goals and one assist each,while Shane Howard (Co. Carlow, Ireland) leads the team with six assists. Bobby Foglesong has eight points with three goals and two assists, followed by Yanick Smith with four assists and two goals for eight points.
The Monarchs return to action Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. when they host Hofstra at the ODUSoccer Complex.
