NORFOLK, VA--The 34th annual Stihl Soccer Classic begins this weekend, Sept. 11 and 13 with host Old Dominion (2-1), William and Mary (1-1), Niagara (0-1-1) and Temple (1-0-1) at the ODU Soccer Complex.
Action begins Friday at 4:30 with William and Mary against Temple, followed by the ODU-Niagara matchat 7 p.m. On Sunday William and Mary will play Niagara at 12 noon, followed by ODU and Temple at2:30 p.m.
Through three games, senior midfielder Nane Joseph leads the team with two goals and four points,followed by Ambane Emmanuel and Bobby Foglesong with one goal each. Freshmen Yannick Smith andShane Howard each have one assist each. In the net, Evan Newton (Virginia Beach, Va.) has a shutout and a 1.00 goals against average.
Temple defeated Villanova, 2-1 and tied Lafayette, 0-0. Sophomore midfielder Tyler Witmer and senior midfielder Francois Sagna lead the Owls with one goal each, while senior forward JT Noone has two assists.
William and Mary lost at Wake Forest, 1-0 and defeated Campbell, 3-2. Senior forward Price Thomas , junior midfielder Ian Stowe and freshman forward Caleb Thomas (Virginia Beach, VA.) each have scored a goal for the Tribe. Niagara tied LaSalle, 2-2 and lost to Duquesne, 1-0. Sophomore forward Carl Haworth leads the Purple Eagles with one goal and one assist for three points, followed by senior midfielder Stephen Kauble with one goal.
The Tournament champion will be presented with the Queen's Cup which was originally givenTo Old Dominion University by the British Royal Navy in 1976 in honor of Queen Elizabeth.
