NORFOLK, Va. - The Old Dominion field hockey team dropped a 1-0 decision to No. 6 Virginia Monday afternoon at the Powhatan Sports Complex. The Lady Monarchs earned seven penalty corners and got off four shots, but were unable to tally a goal against the Cavaliers.

Virginia's lone goal came with only five minutes to play as an Inga Stockel blast was deflected past ODU's goalkeeper Kelly Driscoll (West Chester, Pa.). Driscoll made four saves in the game.

After Virginia's defense stifled ODU's offense for much of the first half, the Lady Monarchs gained three consecutive penalty corners in the final two minutes of the opening stanza. Old Dominion was unable to convert though and the teams entered halftime scoreless.

Perhaps ODU's best scoring chance came with just over 11 minutes remaining in the game as sophomore Rachel Stream (Poolesville, Md) took advantage of the Lady Monarchs fifth penalty corner and blasted a shot that just missed the cage, winding up inches left. Stream, ODU's leading goal scorer, was named to the FieldHockey.com Honor Roll earlier this week.

Old Dominions defense continued to play its best late into the game. Senior Hanna Warren (Green Lane, Pa.) came up with a critical defensive save after Paige Selenski put a shot on goal. However, after holding the Cavaliers scoreless for 65 minutes, the Stockel goal would be the decider.

The Lady Monarchs pressured late and had the ball near the circle with just under 10 seconds remaining, but they were unable to get a shot on goal.

Old Dominion will play its first road game of the season at Syracuse on September 11. The Lady Monarchs and the Orange will battle at J.S. Coyne Stadium at 3 p.m.
