NORFOLK, Va. - Senior Kathleen Shea (Elizaville, N.Y.) and junior Loran Hatch (Green Lane, Pa.) each tallied goals in the first half, but the No. 16 Old Dominion field hockey team fell to No. 1 Maryland 6-3 at the Powhatan Sports Complex Friday evening.

The Lady Monarchs (2-1) scored the first goal of the game and senior goalkeeper Kelly Driscoll (West Chester, Pa.) made a season-high eight saves, but a potent Maryland offensive attack proved to be too much. The Terrapins (4-0) outshot ODU 22-8 and garnered three more penalty corners (8-5).

Old Dominion got on the board quickly as Shea netted her second goal of the year just 19 seconds into the contest. The senior corralled the ball off a rebound and blasted it past UM keeper Alicia Grater.

Maryland responded though with back-to-back goals from Katie O'Donnell and Colleen Gulick to take a 2-1 lead. ODU took advantage of its next penalty corner as Hatch buried her first goal of the season off assists from Hanna Warren (Green Lane, Pa.) and Katie Ueberroth (Stevens, Pa.).

With the score tied 2-2 and just over a minute remaining in the half, Maryland would grab a lead that it would not surrender. Emma Thomas received the shot off the penalty corner and elevated a shot past Driscoll to give the Terrapins a one-goal edge at the half.

Maryland started the second half on a 3-0 run, getting two goals from O'Donnell and one from Megan Frazer. The Lady Monarchs did not go quietly though. Senior forward Anna Kern (Virginia Beach, Va.) dribbled past a defender into the circle and sent a shot past the UM goalkeeper to pull ODU to within three.

On the very next possession, the Lady Monarchs garnered a penalty corner, but were unable to settle the bouncing ball and get a shot onto the goal. The top-ranked Terrapins were able to run out the clock and hold onto the 6-3 lead.

The Lady Monarchs will wrap up their four-game homestand Monday against No. 6 Virginia. The game will get underway at 12 noon at the Powhatan Sports Complex.

Virginia is off to a 2-0 start and the Cavaliers have not allowed a goal this season. UVA topped Miami (Ohio) 7-0 on August 28 before upending No. 11 Penn State 1-0 two days later. Seven different Cavaliers have scored goals this season and Traci Ragukas leads UVA with two assists.
