SUNSET BEACH, NC--The Lady Monarch golf squad placed fifth at the Seatrail Women's Golf Intercollegiate with a school record score of 919, and freshman Samantha Morrell (North Kingstown, RI.) tied for second.
The previous ODU mark 54-hole school record was 922 on Oct. 6, 2006 at the Lady Pirate Tournament. The Lady Monarchs bested their previous round each day, shooting 309 on Friday, 306 on Saturday and 304 Today. Western Carolina won the event at 897 after posting a tournament best 302 in the final round.
Morrell fired a 75 in today's final round to finish at 220, just four strokes behind the winner Josefine Sundh of WCU. Morrell tied for second with Desiree Karlsson of WCU who host 70 today.
Morrell's score of 220 is just two strokes off the ODU individual 54 hole best of218 set by Ashely Davis in 2006.
Sophomore Kristen Hagan (Charlotte, NC.) shot a team best 74 today to finish at 231 and tie for 17th. Two other Lady Monarchs shot under 80. Emma Gilmore (Ballinaside, Ireland) shot 78 and Connie Farmer (Ontario, Canada) shot 77. Laura Holmes (Co. Mayo, Ireland) finished with a 235 to tie for 27th.
The Lady Monarchs return to action on Oct. 12 and 13 at the University of Richmond Tournament.
