CHICAGO -- Former ODU pitching standout Dan Hudson pitched six strong innings tohelp lead the White Sox to an 8-4 victory over Detroit for his first Major Leaguewin.
The two-time All-CAA pitcher is now 1-1 with a 3.24 earned run average. He pitchedsix innings, allowing just three hits with two runs, five walks and four strikeouts.
Hudson (1-1) outpitched All-Star Edwin Jackson (13-8) over six solid innings, andCarolos Quentin broke it open with a drive to right that capped a four-run eighth and made it 8-2. He pitched out of several jams before turning it over to the bullen.
The AL Central-leading Tigers had won five of six and got off to a good start when Chicago resident Curtis Granderson set a club record with his 24th career leadoff homer. But instead of another shot of momentum, they got a dose of disappointment heading into a four-game series with second-place Minnesota at Comerica Park that could decide the division championship.
Scott Podsednik had two hits, tying the game with a triple and scoring during a three-run sixth against Jackson that gave the White Sox a 4-2 lead and made a winner of Hudson. Quentin, Gordon Beckham and Alexei Ramirez also had two hits apiece and Chicago prevailed.
Hudson started the season in A-League Kannapolis, then was promoted to AA-Birmingham on June 28th where he tossed a 8-1 victory over Huntsville, striking out eight. On August 10, he was promoted to AAA Charlotte after compiling a 7-0 record with a 1.60 ERA with 63 strikeouts in 56.1 innings of work.
Hudson was 2-0 with a 3.43 earned run average in four starts at Charlotte, including a 3-1 win over the Norfolk Tides on Aug. 14th. The two-time All-CAA pitcher made his Harbor Park debut against the Tides, pitching three innings of shutout ball with five strikeouts, one walk and one hit before coming out of the game. He was then called up to Chicago on Sept. 1.
