NORFOLK, Va. -- The ODU women's soccer team (4-4-1) got a second half equalizer from freshman Aubrie Ewell (Richmond, Va.) just three minutes after Loyola University (4-4-2) scored and the two teams played to a 1-1 draw Sunday afternoon. Ewell's first career goal was assisted by sophomore midfielder Jocelyn Weidner (Harrisburg, Pa.).
Neither team mounted much offense in the first half with the best opportunity coming in the 25th minute of play for Loyola. A long pass from the Greyhounds midfield bounded into the box but rookie goalkeeper Bri Alvarado was unable to collect it before Nichole Schiro could cross to Tessa McLenahan. McLenahan had a wide open look at the goal, but ODU's senior defender Brittney Kortz stepped between her shot and the net and made the team save.
In the second half, play picked up with 15 shots in the frame. Loyola would score first, on a quick pass play from Schiro and Lina Staropoli past the ODU defense and up to Theresa Ferraina. Ferraina had one touch by Alvarado and rolled it in for the score in the 60th minute of play.
The Lady Monarchs would up the tempo immediately following the score, just the fourth goal allowed at home in the last 14 games. Just over three minutes later, Weidner would collect a pass from the defense in the middle of the field and then sent a long pass to the right side where Ewell was all alone. The rookie forward had a couple dribbles before sending her shot over the keeper into the back pocket.
ODU threatened again ten minutes later when freshman midfielder Gabrielle Carragino (Virginia Beach, Va.) started a pretty combo of passes to junior Kelsey Williams who flicked to Kelly Evans (Ashburn, Va.) in the box. Evans put a nice shot on frame, but it hit the crossbar, just missing.
Evans was the shooter again in the 88th minute as junior midfielder Ashley Kukura (Virginia Beach, Va.) found Ewell, who slipped it to Evans on the left side Evans got a shot off toward the right side of the goal, but the Loyola keeper, Brittany Henderson, made a terrific diving save.
The Greyhounds had one final opportunity in regulation when they were awarded a free kick from about 25 yards out in the waning moments. With seven seconds remaining, Kelly Thomas laced a shot toward the net, but it slammed off the crossbar.
In overtime, the Lady Monarchs kept pushing, outshooting the Greyhounds 5-2 in extra time. ODU got its best chance in double overtime when sophomore Victoria Johnson (Norfolk, Va.), rookie Ashlee Coutu (Lebanon, Conn.) and Kukura had back-to-back-to-back shots in a crowded box saved by Henderson.
Henderson also made two diving saves in the first overtime period including one on a set piece just outside the box for Old Dominion.
ODU outshot Loyola 17-13 overall, and put eight shots on frame compared to the Greyhounds' four. The game concludes non-conference play for Old Dominion as they prepare to face Georgia State on the road this Thursday, September 24 at 2:00 pm. The Panthers have raced to a 6-1 start this season.
