NORFOLK, Va. - The Old Dominion University Sailing team narrowly edged top-ranked St. Mary's College to capture the 2009 Riley Cup Sunday. Additionally, two-time ICSA national qualifier, Stephanie Roble won the BYO Radial after posting six first-place finishes.
At the Riley Cup, the duo of Zack Kelchner and Ashley Pellerito won the A division, while Zach Runchi and Jessica Milligan placed third in the B division. The Monarchs totaled 74 points, edging out St. Mary's College by just one point. The 13-team field also included the United States Merchant Marine Academy and Navy, which finished third an fourth respectively. Virginia placed fifth, while the ODU Silver boats took home sixth.
Kelchner and Pellerito finished in the top-five in all 10 races, while picking up four first-place finishes. Runchi and Milligan garnered seven top-five finishes, including a win in the sixth race.
Roble blew away a nine-person field at the BYO Radial. She finished no worse than fourth in 14 races, while placing in the top-two in 10 races. Teammate Morgan Wilson, who is also a two-time ICSA national qualifier, ended the day in fourth. Wilson won two races and picked up a second place finish on the day.
The Monarchs were also in action this past weekend at the Laser South #1 event in Annapolis, Md. ODU placed three sailors in the Top 10, including John Shockey, who finished second. Shockey had nine top-five finishes in 20 races. Kevin Shockey finished just behind John in fourth place. Both qualified to participate in the Carl Van Duyne Trophy at KP on Oct. 11-12.
