NORFOLK, VA--ODU freshman Yannick Smith's (Hillsborough, NJ. ) goal with less than 18 minutes left inThe match lifted the Monarchs (3-1) of Old Dominion to a 1-0 victory over Niagara in the34th annual Stihl Soccer Classic at ODU. William and Mary defeated Temple, 2-0 in other match. 1,259 fans were on hand for the games.
The Monarchs dominated play, outshooting the Purple Eagles, 25-10, including 10 shots on goal. With 17:09 left in regulation, Freshman Shane Howard (Co. Carlow, Ireland) hit Smith on a break a way where he then shot pass the Niagara keeper for the game winner.
Niagara goal keeper John Flutowski came up with nine saves, while ODU's Evan Newton had onesave and his second shutout of the season. Ambane Emmanuel led ODU with three shots on goal, followed by Bobby Foglesong with two.
In the first game William and Mary (2-1) defeated Temple (1-1-1), 2-0 as Price Thomas and Andrew Hoxie scored second half goals for the Tribe. William and Mary outshot Temple, 17-7 as Andrew McAdams came up of the shutout along with two saves for the Tribe.
Action resumes on Sunday with William and Mary and Niagara at 12 noon, followed by ODU andTemple at 2:30.
