NORFOLK, VA--Second half goals by Bobby Foglesong and Ambane Emmanuel lifted theMonarchs (1-0) of Old Dominion to a 2-0 victory over Longwood in the season opener for bothteams.
After a scoreless first half, freshman Yannick Smith (Hillsborough, NJ.) tip the ball to Foglesong(Fredericksburg, Va.) In front of the net and he pushed it pass the Lancer keeper for the Monarchs first goal with a little more than 17 minutes left.
The Monarchs second goal came on a break-away as freshman Shane Howard (County Carlow, Ireland)fed Ambane Emmanuel (Cameroon) who was streaking down the middle for the goal.
ODU outshot Longwood, 18-5 on the night. Monarch junior goal keeper Evan Newton (Virginia Beach, VA.) came up with three saves, while Longwoods Joel Helmick had eight.
ODU had eight shots on goal, led by Emmanuel with four and Chris Harmon with three.
ODU returns to action this weekend in the College of Charleston Tournament against Furman on Fridayat 5 p.m., then against The College of Charleston on Sunday at 2:30 p.m.
