BOSTON, Mass. -- Sophomore skipper Stephanie Roble and senior crew Alissa Ayres propelled Old Dominion to ninth place and the final qualifying position for the ICSA National Championship in dramatic fashion Sunday. ODU edged Vermont after Roble and Ayres finished fourth in the final race, leaping the Catamounts by just one point.
After seven completed races in both divisions, Vermont led ODU by six points in the race for the last qualifying position, as only the top nine teams qualify for the June 2-4 National Championship. In A division, Vermont added a seventh point to their lead, finishing tenth while Old Dominion came in 11th.
However, in B division, the ODU tandem cruised to their third straight top ten finish, and third top five of the event. Meanwhile, the Catamounts slipped and finished with just their second effort outside of the top ten in B division. The 20th ranked Monarchs narrowly slipped by the 15th ranked Catamounts with the last ditch effort and will head to the Inter-Collegiate Sailing Assocation's Co-Ed Dinghy National Championship on June 2-4.
Roble and Ayres finished with one win and a pair of fourth place finishes, including the final race that sealed ODU's qualificaiton. The pair finished with 60 points and a sixth place finish in B division.
In A division, junior skipper Kyle Rogachenko sailed with senior crew Jaclyn Finney, totaling 81 points and an eleventh place finish. The tandem struggled for ODU, finishing with just three top ten efforts in the eight completed races, but did post a third place finish on day one.
