HARRISONBURG, Va. -- Senior Jessica Noone scored a career-high five goals, all after halftime, to lead ODU (9-3, 3-1) past James Madison (5-8, 1-3) in overtime today. With less than ten minutes remaining, ODU was down three, but behind Noone and stellar goalkeeping from rookie Sarah Geary, the Lady Monarchs clawed back for the overtime win.
James Madison controlled the first half by slowing the pace and converting on half of their opportunities. The Dukes scored five goals on ten shots in the first half, each from a different player. ODU's offense was stunted by the slowed pace, going scoreless for over 24 minutes in the half after senior Kelly Kimener had the opening tally just 1:40 into the game. Junior Saratu Dodo ended the drought with 4:02 remaining, but Old Dominion went into the half down 5-2.
The Dukes opened another four-goal lead less than a minute into the second half, and maintained at least a two-goal lead for the first 23 minutes.
In the final ten minutes, though, the Lady Monarchs would take over. Senior Jessica Noone scored her second of the day with 8:30 remaining to pull ODU back within two, and junior Ashley Kellogg had the next two to tie the game at eight goals apiece. Kellogg scored on a free-position attempt and then on a nice feed from Kimener from behind the cage.
Neither team was able to capitalize on a pair of opportunities in the remainder, sending the game into overtime. The Dukes won the opening draw and held for one shot in the frame. They got a good look from Mary Kate Lomady, but ODU's rookie goalkeeper Sarah Geary made a terrific save low, and senior defender Lindsey Belle scooped the ground ball.
With less than thirty seconds remaining, ODU pushed downfield and set up the offense. The clock was under ten when Noone got the ball and was double-teamed in the scoring area, and read two seconds when she was hit hard in the face and awarded a free-position attempt. Noone took one step and fired the eventual gamewinner low as time expired.
In the second overtime period, Noone would get ODU an insurance goal with 1:31 remaining. Dodo was double-teamed at the top of the arc, and shoveled a quick pass to Noone inside, who made a quick move and scored to put ODU up by a pair. The Lady Monarchs possessed the ball for most of the remainder and added a tally from Kimener on an assist by Kellogg with no time remaining for the final score, 11-8.
It was the second overtime game of the year for ODU, and the first extra-time win. The Lady Monarchs handed James Madison it's second overtime loss of the weekend, as they fell to William & Mary in overtime on Friday.
Noone's five goals led ODU in a 9-3 run after halftime, and led the way for ODU with five points and the game-winning goal. Kellogg had four points on three goals and an assist and Kimener added two goals and two assists. Geary managed ten saves and eight goals allowed, while not allowing a goal in the final 16:38 of the game. Lindsey Belle, Kimener and Jordan McKeon all had three ground balls, while Belle added a game-high three caused turnovers.
JMU was led by Mary Kate Lomady, with a goal and two assists, while Ashley Kimener added two goals of her own. Morgan Kelly played the full 66 minutes in goal for the Dukes and made seven saves.
It was the first win over the Dukes since 2003 and just the eighth all-time against JMU. The Dukes committed 27 fouls to ODU's 12, and ODU outshot JMU 25-21. The Dukes had 15 draw controls while ODU managed just six.
ODU returns to the field this Friday, April 17 as they play host to Hofstra in CAA action.
