Hernandez Hit In Ninth Lifts ODU To A 2-1 Win At Georgia State

ATLANTA, GA-- Old Dominion (11-19/5-7) sophomore catcher Edgar Hernandez (Luquillo, PR.) singled home Chris Buss (Rosemount, MN. ) with two outs in the top of the ninth to give the Monarchs a 2-1 Colonial Athletic Association victory over Georgia State (23-11/6-3) Sunday.

In the sixth with the game tied at 1-1, and two outs, Chris Buss and Kenny Stoneback (Colonial Heights, VA.) got the ODU rally started with back-to-back singles. Edgar Hernandez then singles home Buss to give ODU the lead, 2-1.

The Monarchs tied the game in the sixth when Jake McAloose (Virginia Beach, Va.) walked, went to second on a wild pitch and scored on Josh Wright's (Bridgewater, Va.) double. Wright was the CAARookie of the Week.

Georgia State scored first when Nick Hogan was hit by a pitch, and Derek Simmons followed with a single and Hogan moved up to third. Both Hogan and Simmons double steal, while Hogan scoring.

Freshman Ben Tomchick pitched seven innings in the no decision. He now has a 2.80earned run average,after fanning six with just three hits allowed. Chris Boggs picked up the win in relief and lowers his ERAto 3.33. Austin Wright got the save, his first of the year.

Jake McAloose now leads the team with a .371 batting average, while Donnie Corsnerleads with 25 RBI and 10 doubles.

ODU returns to action on Tuesday when they travel to Liberty for a 3 p.m. contest, then travel toElon on Wednesday for a 5 p.m. game.
