No. 5 UNC Defeats ODU, 7-6 With Run In Bottom Of The Ninth

CHAPEL HILL, NC--Mark Fleury's one out hit in the bottom of the ninth lifted the fifth rankedTar Heels of North Carolina (22-6) to a 7-6 victory over Old Dominion (8-16) Wednesday evening.

ODU tied the game in the top of the ninth when Josh Wright scored from third on a double play.In the eight Brett Harris sacrifice fly plated Joe Velleggia from third to give the Monarchs a 5-3Lead.

The Tar Heels rallied in the bottom of the eighth with three runs. Fleury led the inning off witha solo homer. Later in the inning Garrett Gore tripled to right, scoring Ben Bunting and Mike Cavasinifor a 6-5 UNC lead. In the ninth inning Levi Michael reached on an ODU error, then was balked tosecond which set up the game winning hit for Fleury.

In the fifth, Max Most doubled home Josh Wright, then Gerard Hall slammed a two-run homer.Most led ODU with three hits on the day, while Hall had two hits. Joe Velleggia and Josh Wrightboth scored twice for ODU, and Hall and Brett Harris knocked in two runs each.

Garrett Gore led UNC with three hits, while Fleury, and Ben Bunting each had two hits.ODU returns to CAA action this weekend with a three-game series at James Madison beginningFriday at 3 p.m.
