NORFOLK, Va. -- Sixteen members of the Lady Monarch field hockey team were named to the 2008 ZAG/NFHCA Division I National Academic Squad. Old Dominion was tied for second on the list for the most members among its Division I counterparts. The National Academic Squad recognizes those student-athletes who have achieved a cumulative GPA of 3.30 or higher through the first semester of the 2008-09 academic year.
The 16 Lady Monarchs are seniors Kelly Driscoll (West Chester, Pa.) and Katelyn Smither (Suffolk, Va.), juniors Alyschia Conn (Peach Bottom, Pa.), Anna Kern (Virginia Beach, Va.), Kathleen Shea (Elizaville, N.Y.), Katie Ueberroth (Stevens, Pa.), and Hanna Warren (Green Lane, Pa.), sophomores Amanda Bieber (Elizabethtown, Pa.), Paige Clutter (Chambersburg, Pa.), Louise Gericke (Annandale, Va.), Loran Hatch (Green Lane, Pa.), Stephanie Kratzer (Lititz, Pa.), and Samantha Richardson (Surrey, British Columbia), and freshmen Jestine Angelini (Boiling Springs, Pa.), Marla Petriello (Harleysville, Pa.) and Julia Simo (Barcelona, Spain).
Two Lady Monarchs are making their third appearance on the All-Academic Team: Conn - a chemistry major and Smither - a health and physical education major.
Nine Lady Monarchs are making their second appearance on the All-Academic Team: Bieber - an exercise science; Clutter - a health sciences major; Driscoll - a criminal justice major; Hatch - a biology major; Kratzer - a pharmacy major; Richardson - a biology and business major; Shea - a health and physical education major; Ueberroth - a communications major and Warren - a biology major.
Members of the All-Academic Team were awarded for their accomplishments on the field as well. Smither and Driscoll earned Second Team All-Region honors, while Smither was also named to Second Team All-State. Smither and Shea were also First Team All-CAA selections this past fall.
As a team, the ODU field hockey squad was honored by the NFHCA as one of 65 Division I field hockey programs earning a National Academic Team Award for attaining a team grade point average of 3.0 or higher. The Lady Monarchs boasted the second highest GPA among all Division I field hockey programs compiling a team average of 3.47.
Since 1989, the Old Dominion field hockey team has earned a grade point average of 3.0 or better.
