NORFOLK, Va. -- The 20th ranked Old Dominion University sailing team finished sixth overall at the Aaron Szambecki Team Race this weekend, as the Monarchs hosted some of the best teams in the country. ODU had wins over #5 College of Charleston, #11 Stanford and a pair against Dartmouth. The Monarchs finished ahead of Dartmouth and the 11th ranked Cardinal for the sixth place finish.
Norfolk boasted fantastic weather for the conclusion of the team race regatta, with high temperatures in the 80s and winds at nearly 20 knots. The teams were able to complete two rounds of round-robin tournament format, plus the final four round.
Fourth ranked St. Mary's won the event, going 13-4 overall, winning the tiebreaker against second ranked Boston College, which also went 13-4.
The Monarch sailors in the event included seniors Michael Brown, Jaclyn Finney, and Alissa Ayres, juniors Kyle Rogachenko, Michael Komar, Ashley Brusso and Wilson Stout and sophomore skipper Stephanie Roble. Brown, Rogachenko, Roble and Komar sailed in all 14 races, while Ayres and Finney sailed the first nine with Stout and Brusso stepping in for the final five.
ODU also placed fourth at the MAISA/SAISA regatta in Hampton this weekend.
