Norfolk, Va. – The Old Dominion University’s women’s tennis team won two of three doubles matches and all but one singles match as the Lady Monarchs defeated UMASS, 6-1, Friday afternoon at the Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center. With the victory the Lady Monarchs improved to 17-4, while the Minutewomen fell to 8-9.
"UMASS has had some injuries this year, however, they are a very scrappy team,” said head coach Darryl Cummings. “Our doubles has a nice balance and we are making it hard for teams to win the doubles point against us. It was great to play some outdoor tennis today before having to move indoors. Our players have some very good tennis mojo going on."
ODU opened by winning the doubles point with victories at No. 1 and No. 2. Nadine Fahoum and Margarita Spicin cruised to an 8-1 win over Kaitlyn Carpenter and Tanisha Hodgson at No. 1, while at No. 2 Joanna Dobrowolska and Irina Dementyeva won 8-2 over Maude Lecluyse and Laura Danai.
In singles action, the Lady Monarchs won all five of their matches in straight sets, while surrendering just one point with a loss at No. 5.
