Wilmington, N.C. – The Seahawks of UNC Wilmington got their first ever victory over Old Dominion on Saturday with a 5-2 upset of the 69th ranked Monarchs at the UNCW Tennis Complex. The Seahawks improved to 7-3, 1-0 in the CAA, while the Monarchs fell to 13-8, 2-1 in league play.
The Monarchs secured the doubles point with an 8-3 win at No. 1 and an 8-5 victory at No. 2. However, the rest of the day wasn’t as successful for ODU as the Monarchs managed to win just one singles match.
Aleksandr Seleznev’s 6-3, 6-0 victory over UNCW’s Gustavo Bertei at No. 1 gave the Monarchs a 2-1 advantage, but the Seahawks rebounded to win the final four singles matches, accounting for the 5-2 final score. In the process, ODU’s Matt Fawcett had his 18-match winning streak snapped with a 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 loss to Kinshuk Sharma at No. 4.
