FAIRFAX, Va. -- The Old Dominion men's swimming and diving team swam to two Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) event championships ans six ODU records on day two of the 2009 CAA Swimming and Diving Championship. Senior Johan Lundberg (Fjaras, Sweden) captured the 200 IM and four-time CAA Swimmer of the Week Arni Mar Arnason (Msfellsbaer, Iceland) won the 50 free with an NCAA "B" Cut.
The Monarchs stand in second place after day two action behind seven-time CAA champion, UNC-Wilimington. The Lady Monarchs are in sixth.
Lundberg and Arnason both set a new ODU records with their finishes. Lundberg bested the previous top time of 1:51.77 recorded by John Wenham in 1998, while Arnason reset the mark of 20.35 posted by Matt Craven in 1998. It is Arnason's second NCAA "B" cut time of the season having also recorded an NCAA "B" cut mark in the 100 breast earlier this season.
Lundberg was one of three Monarchs swimming in the 200 IM final. Also placing in the top eight were Kristian Ramkvist (Bjarred, Sweden) in third (1:51.29) and Kevin Latimer (Newport News, Va.) in eighth (1:54.81).
The men's 200 free relay team placed third. The team of Arnason, Lundberg, Steven Loccisano (Fredericksburg, Va.), and Chad Gangwer (Va. Beach, Va.) registered a finish in 1:21.21 for yet another ODU record. They reset the previous record captured in 2000.
On the women's side, three ODU records were set in the 200 IM, 50 free, and 200 free relay.
Freshman Erla Haraldsdottir (Njardvik, Iceland) finished second in the 200 IM. Her time of 2:02.71 set a new Old Dominion record resetting the previous mark of 2:05.30 set by Kara Fichthorn in 2001.
Also making a top eight appearances for the women on Thursday was Agata Nowak (Gorzow, Poland) in the 50 free. Nowak tied for sixth with a time of 23.45, also setting another ODU school record for the Lady Monarchs. Nowak also holds the ODU record in the 100 fly.
The women's 200 free relay team finshed in eighth place. The team of Nowak, Haraldsdottir, Liza Moiseeva (Moscow, Russia), and Maddie Stiles (Fairfax, Va.) collected a time of 1:35.37 for a new ODU record, resetting the nearly 11-year old mark.
In diving action on Thursday, David Scorupa (Richmond, Va.) finished in eighth place on the men's 1-meter. Scorupa scored a 272.25.
