NORFOLK, VA-- Matt Janning scored 20 second halfpoints to lead CAA Co-Leading Northeastern (13-6/8-1) to a58-42 victory over Old Dominion (11-8/4-5) Saturday eveningin front of a crowd of 7572 at the Constant Center.
The Monarchs jumped out to a 20-7 led with 7:55 left in the first half, butthe Huskies rallied and after a trey by Matt Smith with 32 seconds left, ODUhalftime lead was just 24-21.
In the second half, ODU scored only 18 points, while the Huskies scored 37 ledby Janning's 20. The Monarchs were 6-for-25 from the floor in the second half (.240 percent) while Northeastern hit 11-21 (.524 percent)in the second period. Northeastern also scored 18 points off the Monarchs 16 turnovers. For the game, ODUshot .291 from the field and NU shot .487.
Northeastern took the lead for good, 36-34 on Nkem Ojougboh's dunk with 12:59left. The Huskies led by as many as 17 the rest of the way.
No Monarch scored in double-figures tonight. Darius James (Virginia Beach, Va.) and Keyon Carter (Riviera Beach, FL.) ledwith eight points each for ODU. Ben Finney(Portsmouth, VA.) led the Monarchs with eight rebounds. ODUdominated the boards, 36-26. Manny Adako led Northeastern with eight rebounds.
The 42 points scored by ODU was the fewest the Monarchs have ever scored in the Constant Center which opened in 2002-03 season. The crowd of 7572 was the secondlargest this season behind only the UAB game crowd of 7870.
The Monarchs return to action on Wednesday night when they travel to Harrisonburgto take on the Dukes of James Madison.
