NORFOLK, Va. - The Old Dominion men's and women's swimming and diving teams spilt Saturday's meet with UNC-Wilmington. The women's team improved to 4-6 overall with a 151-145 victory as sophomore Agata Nowak (Gorzow, Poland) broke the school record in the 100 fly. The men's squad saw its 15 meet win streak come to an end with a 160-141 loss to the seven-time defending Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) champions. The Monarchs drop to 5-1 overall.
Nowak swam her way to a time of 56.65 in the 100 fly, placing second, but breaking the 25-year old Lady Monarch record. Agata surpassed the previous record of 56.78 held by Penny Shelor in 1984.
Nowak also captured the top time in the 200 fly with a time of 2:07.27.
Senior Liza Moiseeva (Moscow, Russia), sophomore April Barrientos (Va. Beach, Va.), and freshman Erla Haraldsdottir (Njardvik, Iceland) helped the Lady Monarchs to victory with a pair of top finishes. Moisseva recorded a time of 53.31 in the 100 free and a time of 1:54.86 in the 200 free. Barrientos meanwhile posted a time of 57.32 in the 100 back and a time of 2:05.17 in the 200 back. Haraldsdottir swam to victory in the 100 breast clocking in at 1:05.36 and registered a top time of 2:06.60 in the 200 IM for the fifth fastest time in ODU history in the event.
Other top times for the Lady Monarchs included senior Jennifer Sargent (Chesterfield, Va.) in the 200 breast (2:24.46).
On the boards, Jasmine Moore (Yorktown, Va.) won both the 1 and 3 meter events. Moore collected a score of 146.85 on the 1 meter and won the 3 meter with a total of 227.55.
The ODU men's time meawhile came out on top in seven events led by freshman Arni Mar Arnason (Msfellsbaer, Iceland) in a pair of victories. The Iceland native captured the toptime in the 50 free with a time of 21.19, as well as the 100 free by hitting the wall in a time of 46.49.
In addtion to Arnanson's two wins, junior Kristian Ramkvist (Bjarred, Sweden) placed his name among the top Monarch times in history with his performance in the 200 breast. Clocking in at a tiem of 2:07.42, Ramkvist placed his name ninth in the ODU history books.
Other top peformances by the Monarchs against the Seahawks included Steven Loccisano (Fredericksburg, Va.) in the 200 free (1:43.34), junior Kevin Latimer (Newport News, Va.) in the 200 fly (1:55.10), Mikael Ramkvist (Bjarred, Sweden) in the 200 back (1:51.63), and Josh Kinas (Reston, Va.) in the 200 IM (1:55.30)
The Old Dominion men's and women's swimming and diving squads return to action next weekend. The Monarchs and Lady Monarchs will host the College of Charleston on Saturday, January 17th at 10:00 a.m.
