CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Five invite records, a two Old Dominion records, and a NCAA "B" cut qualifying time were highlights of day two for the Old Dominion men's and women's swimming and diving teams at the Davidson Invitational.
The Old Dominion men's team holds the top spot at the invite, while women's team currently sits in second place with 313 points behind leader Gardner-Webb with 347 points.
Arni Mar Arnason (Msfellsbaer, Iceland) collected a NCAA "B" cut qualifying time and a new Old Dominion and Davidson Invitational record with his performance in the 100 breast. Arnason swam his way to a 54.57 time. He bested his previous 100 breast and Monarch record of 55.04 and reset the previous invite mark of 57.90 set by Marek Malopolski of Indiana of PA.
Three other Monarchs joined Arnason in the 100 breast final. Johan Lundberg (Fjaras, Sweden) took home third place (58.23), Kristian Ramkvist (Bjarred, Sweden) placed fourth (58.26), and Joshua Kinas (Reston, Va.) registered an eighth place finish (59.29).
The 100 breast would not be the only Davidson Invitational record Arnason would set. He also reset the benchmark in the 50 free with a time of 20.63 replacing the former top time of 21.21 set by Bartosz Ostrowski of Indiana University of PA. His time also tied his top time of the year, which is the second fastest time in Old Dominion history.
Also joining Arnason in the 50 free final were Steven Loccisano (Fredericksburg, Va.) in seventh (21.87) and Tim Daniels (Oakton, Va.) in eighth (21.91).
Erla Dogg Haraldsdottir (Njardvik, Iceland) set a new Old Dominion and Davidson Invitational record in the 100 breast. Haraldsdottir swam to a time of 1:03.24 outswimming second place by three seconds. Her time reset the previous Davidson Invitational mark of 1:05.66 set by Davidson's Megan Hollar back in 2005 and the previous Lady Monarch record of 1:04.91 set by Nancy Horvatic in 1984.
Also swimming in the 100 breast were Jennifer Sargent (Chesterfield, Va.) and Kelley Sayers (Hampton, Va.) placing fourth (1:06.68) and fifth (1:06.99) respectively and Lauren Fiskus (Yorktown, Va.) in seventh place (1:08.93).
Kevin Latimer (Newport News, Va.) won the 200 fly setting a new Davidson Invitational record for a second consecutive year. His time of 1:53.10 reset last year's top time of 1:55.00. Latimer's performance also helped him crack the top 200 fly times in ODU history coming in ninth on the list.
Also in the 200 fly were Daniel Gallagher (Rochester, N.Y.) taking fourth (1:54.94)and Eric Doordan placing seventh (1:59.97).
The 400 medley relay squad of Erla Dogg Haraldsdottir, April Barrientos (Va. Beach, Va.), Madeline Stiles (Fairfax, Va.), and Emma Forbes (Peeskill, N.Y.) also reset a Davidson Invitational record. The team posted a time of 3:54.71 resetting the previous record of 3:56.30 set by Gardner-Webb last season.
On the diving board, the Monarchs went one-two-three on the men's side. David Skorupa (Richmond, Va.) placed first overall with 263.65 points followed by Peter Stickl (Falls Church, Va.) with a score of 230.70, and Raymond Curry (Falls Church, Va.) in third with 185.80 points.
In diving action on the women's side, the Lady Monarchs claimed the top two spots in the 3 meter. Senior Jasmine Moore captured the title with 207.20 points followed by Kelsey Thompson in second with 200.70.
In other relay action, the 200 medley relay squad claimed third and the 200 free relay team placed fourth overall. The 200 free team consisting of Emma Forbes, Casie Connolly (Williamsburg, Va.), Kelli North (Newport News, Va.), Jennifer Sargent finished with a time of 1:40.18.
Other top finishes for the Old Dominion women's swimming team on day two of the Davidson Invitational included a third place finish by Madeline Stiles (2:09.10) and fourth place finish by Christina Gianni (Bensalem, Pa.) (2:09.94) in the 200 fly and a seventh place time in the 200 free by Elizaveta Mooiseva (Moscow, Russia)(1:57.31). Stiles also placed fourth in the 400 IM with a 4:35.24.
April Barrientos who had set a Davidson Invitational and ODU school record in the 100 back last season, took third in the 100 back hitting the wall in a time of 57.55.
In relay action for the men, the 200 medley relay team placed second (1:35.27), the 200 free style team of Chad Gangwer (Va. Beach, Va.), Tim Daniels, Johan Lundberg, and Steven Loccisano took third taking a time of 1:26.14, and the 400 medley relay squad of Mikeal Ramkvist (Bjarred, Sweden), Arni Arnason, Eric Doordan (Burke, Va.), and Chad Gangwer placed third with a 3:28.80 finish.
The 200 free had two Monarchs in the finals. Steven Loccisano took fourth (1:42.70) and Kristoger Hagg (Skovde, Sweden)came in seventh (1:45.88).
Four Monarchs placed in the 400 IM finals led by a second place time by Dan Gallagher who hit the wall in a time of 4:10.37. Gallagher was followed by Kevin Latimer placing third (4:10.38), Bryan Russell (Prince George, Va.) in fourth (4:10.64), and Kristian Ramkvist in fifth (4:12.49).
Action at the 2008 Davidson Invitational concludes tomorrow with the 200 medley relay, 400 free relay, 200 back, 500 free, 100 fly, 200 breast, 100 free, and 200 IM.
