BOSTON, Mass. -- The Old Dominion field hockey team returned to the win column Saturday afternoon as senior Katelyn Smither (Suffolk, Va.) scored twice on penalty corner opportunities in the 2-1 victory over Boston University.
The win snaps a two-game skid for the Lady Monarch and ups their record to 2-6 overall heading into tomorrow's Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) opener at Northeastern. Boston University, meanwhile, fell to 3-6 overall
The Lady Monarchs led 1-0 at the half after Smither captured her first goal in the game's 20th minute. Junior Hanna Warren (Green Lane, Pa.) and sophomore Loran Hatch (Green Lane, Pa.) were credited with the assists.
Helping to preserve the Old Dominion lead at the half was sophomore Stephanie Kratzer (Lititz, Pa.) who stopped a Terrier shot on goal with a defensive save.
Boston University tied the game eight minutes into the second stanza. The Terriers' Maryette Stuart converted a penalty stroke to knot the score at 1-1.
Three minutes later, however, Old Dominion would be back in the lead. Smither collected her second goal of the game in similar fashion to her first. The CAA Preseason Player of the Year's strike on a penalty corner, off the insert and stick-stop by Warren and Hatch, gave the Lady Monarchs the game-winner.
Senior goalkeeper Kelly Driscoll (West Chester, Pa.), the CAA leader in saves, made five to help the Lady Monarch to victory. Boston University's Kim Kastuk registered only one save.
In win, Old Dominion was outshot by Boston University, 10-5. The Terriers held a 3-2 advantage in penalty corners, but the Lady Monarchs managed to convert on both their opportunities for the win.
The Old Dominion field hockey team returns to action looking to make it two-in-a-row when they take on Northeastern on Sunday.
