ODU Sailors Sweep Three Event Weekend: Riley Cup Recap

NORFOLK, Va. -- ODU swept the trio of events entered on the first weekend of the sailing season with a first and second place finish at the Riley Cup, a first, second and fourth place finish at the ODU/BYO Laser Radial and a win of the Laser South #1. The Old Dominion hosted Riley Cup was won by Alan Alkins and Mike Komar with a first place finish in A division and by Bryan Stout, Arielle Darrow and Miles Martschink in B division.

Alkins and Komar took the win in A division, with 23 total points. The pair never finished out of the top four boats and won one race in eight complete. The B division trio for the ODU Blue team took second, with 32 total points. Stout skippered the boat to two seconds and three third place finishes on the weekend to help the ODU Blue team win the regatta with 55 total points.

The ODU Silver team finished second, with 71 total points, narrowly fending off the Georgetown sailors who finished with 72. The points came down to the final B division race of the day, as Zach Kelchner and Ashley Pellerito scored a second place finish while the Hoyas came in third for the difference. Pellerito and Kelchner won the B division with just 18 points in eight races, winning three races and finishing second or third in four more.

The Silver team's A division boat finished sixth with 53 points. Patty O'Bryan and Kaitlyn Paulsen won a race and finished second once on the second day, but also struggled to a pair of 12's. Still, the ODU Silver team managed to hold off Georgetown for second place at the regatta.
