COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- No. 8 Old Dominion field hockey fell 8-1 to second-ranked Maryland Friday afternoon. Senior Katelyn Smither (Suffolk, Va.) scored the lone goal as the Lady Monarchs fell to 0-3 on the season.
Maryland built a 3-0 lead in the first half before Smither broke Old Dominion onto the scoreboard in the game's 30th minute of play. The senior defender managed to get her stick on the ball among a cluster of players following a rebound off keeper Alicia Grater. Smither's goal was the first Old Dominion goal of the 2008 season.
The Terps would score once more ending the first half up 4-1. Maryland's Katie O'Donnell scored her second goal of the afternoon en-route to totaling four tallies in the contest.
Maryland found the back of the Lady Monarch cage four more times in the second half. O'Donnell continued her scoring barrage, capturing the hat trick in the game's 59th minute and tacking on her fourth and final goal a mere two minutes later.
Old Dominion was outshot 21-6 and outcornered 5-3. Senior netminder Kelly Driscoll (West Chester, Pa.) made five saves. Maryland's Grater allowed the lone ODU goal and recorded two stops.
The Lady Monarchs return to action on Sunday, September 7th at 1:00 p.m. against No. 11 Virginia in Charlottesville.
