COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. -- The No. 8 Old Dominion field hockey team dropped a 5-0 contest against No. 18 Syracuse Saturday afternoon in a neutral site contest at Ursinus' Eleanor Frost Snell Alumnae Field. The Lady Monarchs once against played to a 0-0 halftime stalemate, but gave up five answered scores in the second half.
Syracuse's Lindsey Conrad captured a hattrick in the Orangewomen's 2008 debut. The Lady Monarchs meanwhile fell to 0-2 on the year.
After a scoreless first half of action, Syracuse broke the scoreless tie with 29:14 left after being awarded a penalty stroke. The Orangewomen's Martin Loncarica converted her attempt for the first of her two goals on the afternoon.
Within the next six minutes, Syracuse mounted a 3-0 lead. Three minutes after getting onto the scoreboard, the Orangewomen stuck again scoring on a penalty corner. Shannon Taylor, on the stop, dribbled the ball inside the circle where Conrad tipped the ball into the cage for the first of her three tallies. Syracuse and Conrad found the back of the ODU cage yet again three minutes later. Shelby Schrade passed the ball across the front of the Lady Monarch goal where Conrad fired through into the cage.
Conrad captured the hattrick with 17:23 left in the game on a penalty corner attempt. Maggie Berfort inserted the ball into play while Taylor made the stop setting up for Conrad for her third goal of the afternoon.
Syracuse's fifth and final goal came with 8:16 left on the clock. Loncarica intercepted an attempt by the Old Dominion defense to clear the ball out of the circle. With the Lady Monarch cage cleared after the Orangewomen's fourth goal in favor of 11 field players, Lorcarica got the ball into the back of the cage for her second goal of the game.
Senior goalkeeper Kelly Driscoll (West Chester, Pa.) made six saves in the cage for Old Dominion, who were outshot, 16-2. Syracuse's Heather Hess needed just one save to preserve the shutout.
The Old Dominion field hockey squad returns to action next weekend against a pair of ACC opponents. The Lady Monarchs meet Maryland in College Park on Friday, September 5th, in the first of two meetings with the Terps, followed by a trip to Charlottesville to meet up with the University of Virginia on Sunday, September 7th.
