Norfolk, Va. - Old Dominion University athletic director Jim Jarrett announced today that head men's and women's tennis coach Darryl Cummings has accepted an extension of his contract through the 2011-2012 season.
"Darryl Cummings has contributed to the Monarch tennis programs as a player and a coach," added Jarrett. "His teams are composed of quality student-athletes with good fundamentals, and he has made positive contributions to the Hampton Roads tennis community. I am pleased that Darryl has committed to continue to provide leadership to both the men's and women's tennis programs and be part of the management team of our Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center through 2012."
A 1992 graduate of ODU, Cmmings is entering his 15th season as the men's coach and his 17th season overseeing the women's program. He has led the men's team to an appearance in the 2007 NCAA Tournament, while his women's squad captured the 2001 Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) championship. In addition, Cummings is the only coach to be honored as both the CAA women's tennis Coach of the Year (1993, 1994, 2001) and the men's Coach of the Year (1996, 2005, 2007).
Regionally, Cummings has been named Mid-Atlantic Coach of the Year and Virginia Coach of the Year by the United State Professional Tennis Association (USPTA).
He holds certification by the USPTA and the United States Professional Tennis Registry (USPTR) and has taught, coached, or trained sectional, national, and world ranked players. Included in that group of players are Tzipi Obziler, the 1995 #1 ranked women's player, #15 regionally-ranked Miguel Rosa, the 1995 CAA Men's Player of the Year, and former ITA East Regional champion and four-time CAA Player of the Year Nataly Cahana. This past season he helped guide freshman Nadine Fahoum to CAA Co-Rookie of the Year honors with a mark of 20-2.
"I am very appreciative of Dr. Jarrett and the university for the support they have extended to the tennis program and myself," said Cummings. "In recent years with their support we have had NCAA qualifiers, All-Americans, Davis Cup players, Fed Cup Players, and an Olympian. I am looking forward to future successes while serving as the tennis director along with our expanded tennis staff and the new Folkes-Stevens Indoor Tennis Center."
