Shawler, Bergh and Carter Join Hudson In Baseball Draft

NORFOLK, VA--Three more Monarch pitchers were selected inthe Major League Baseball draft today. Anthony Shawler (Chesapeake, VA./Oscar Smith HS) was chosen in the ninth round by the Detroit Tigers, Dexter Carter (Murfreesboro, NC. Greenbrier Christian) was picked in the 13th by the Chicago White Sox, and senior Ryan Bergh (Reddick, FL) waspicked in the 26th round by the Philadelphia Phillies. They join juniorrighthander Dan Hudson (Virginia Beach, Va.) was picked in the fifth round by the White Sox on Thursday.

Four selections in one draft ties a school mark set in 2006,1984 and1992.

Anthony Shawler compiled a 5-3 record with two complete games and 96strikeouts in 75.2 innings of work. Shawler tied for second in the CAAin strikeouts. He was named second team All-CAA pitcher and third teamAll-CAA outtielder. Shawler tied an ODU single game strikeout recordwhen he fanned 18 against Northeastern (tying mark set by Jason Godinin 2006).

As a hitter, Shawler hit .314 with seven homers, 40 RBI, 14 doubles andthree triples. He was second on the team in triples and homers.Shawler currently has four career shutouts which rank him fifth all-timeat ODU and 253 career strikeouts in 216.2 innings which rank him fourth all-time at ODU.

In 2007, Shawler earned All-American honors from three different publications as he compiled an 11-2 record with a 2.20 ERA. He fanned130 batters in 114 innings.

Dexter Carter was 3-4 this season with a 8.76 ERA. He fanned 35 battersin 37 innings of work. Carter fanned a career high 12 batters in 2007against Maryland and tossed a shutout against Norfolk State in 2007.

Ryan Bergh was 6-6 this season with a 3.57 ERA. He led the CAA incomplete games with five and ranked fourth in the league in earned runaverage. Bergh fanned eight against Northeastern and opponents hit only.256 against him.

Bergh was the recipient of the prestigious Wilkins-Howard Memorialaward as ODU's Male Scholar Athlete of the Year. He graduated in Maywith a 3.6 GPA in Sports Management.
