NORFOLK, VA--The four Old Dominion University baseball pitchers: Dan Hudson,(Virginia Beach, VA.) Anthony Shawler (Chesapeake, VA.), Dexter Carter (Murfreesboro, NC.) and Ryan Bergh (Reddick, FL.) who were selectedin the Major League Baseball draft earlier this month have been assigned to minor league clubs.

Dan Hudson, and Dexter Carter will play for the Great Falls (MT.) Voyagers in the Pioneer League.

Anthony Shawler will play for the Oneonta Tigers in the New York-Penn League and Ryan Bergh will be with the Clearwater Thrashers of the Gulf Coast League.

Hudson was selected in the fifth round by the Chicago White Sox, Shawler as selectedin the ninth round by the Detroit Tigers, while Carter was picked in the 13th round bythe Chicago White Sox and Bergh in the 26th round by the Philadelphia Phillies.

Dan Hudson was the 150th overall selection of the Major League Baseball draft by the American League Chicago White Sox. The Virginia Beach, Va. native (Princess Anne HS) is the 12th Monarch ever to be drafted in the fifth round or higher.Hudson was 5-6 with a 4.76 earned run average. He led the CAA in strikeouts with 107 in 92 innings of work.

Opponents hit only .249 against the second team All-CAA selection. In three seasons, Hudson has 295 career strikeouts in 292 innings of work which ranks him second all-time at ODU and tenth all-time in CAA history. Hudson had three complete games this year and fanned a season and career high tying 13 in a game against CAA Tournament champion James Madison.

Anthony Shawler compiled a 5-3 record with two complete games and 96 strikeouts in 75.2 innings of work. Shawler tied for second in the CAA in strikeouts. He was named second team All-CAA pitcher and third team All-CAA outtielder. Shawler tied an ODU single game strikeout record when he fanned 18 against Northeastern (tying mark set by Jason Godin in 2006).

As a hitter, Shawler hit .314 with seven homers, 40 RBI, 14 doubles and three triples. He was second on the team in triples and homers. Shawler currently has four career shutouts which rank him fifth all-time at ODU and 253 career strikeouts in 216.2 innings which rank him fourth all-time at ODU.Dexter Carter was 3-4 this season with a 8.76 ERA. He fanned 35 batters in 37 innings of work. Carter fanned a career high 12 batters in 2007 against Maryland and tossed a shutout against Norfolk State in 2007.

Ryan Bergh was 6-6 this season with a 3.57 ERA. He led the CAA in complete games with five and ranked fourth in the league in earned run average. Bergh fanned eight against Northeastern and opponents hit only .256 against him.Bergh was the recipient of the prestigious Wilkins-Howard Memorial award as ODU's Male Scholar Athlete of the Year. He graduated in May with a 3.6 GPA in Sports Management.
