No. 26 UNCW Edges ODU, 3-2 On Eighth Inning Homer

WILMINGTON, NC--Mark Carver's solo homerun in the eighth lifted 26thranked UNC Wilmington to a 3-2 victory over Old Dominion Thursday night.The Seahawks are 40-12-1 overall and 24-3-1 in the CAA, while the Monarchsare 24-24 overall and 13-13 in the CAA.

UNCW took a 2-0 lead as Jason Appel singled home Rhett Miller in the third andMiller scored again in the fifth on wild pitch.

ODU battled back to tie the game when Gerard Hall singled home Jack McAloosein the seventh and David Burns singled home Max Most in the eighth.

Carver then broke the tie in the bottom of the eighth with a one out homer. He leads the nation with 78 RBI's and ranks third nationally with 21 homeruns. Bradley Holt won hisninth straight game of the year, striking out 11 with only three walks and six hits.

Dan Hudson finished with seven strikeouts with just three hits allowed and two walks.Hudson now has a CAA leading 102 strikeouts in 85 innings of work. David Burns and Gerard Hall led ODU with two hits each. Game two of the series is Friday at 4 p.m. ODU needs one win or a loss by Northeastern to qualify for next weeks six-team CAATournament.
