NORFOLK, VA--The Old Dominion Monarchs (24-23) defeated Richmond(19-29-2) Tuesday evening. Four ODU pitchers held the Spiders to just five hitsin the game.
Junior righthander Dexter Carter (Murfreesboro, NC.)won his second straight game allowing only two runs with two walks and four strikeouts in six-plus innings of work. from the third to the start of the seventh, Carter retired 10 batters in a row. Daniel Abdalla (Stevensville, MD.), Robbie Watkins (Newport News, VA.) and Kyle Hald (Springfield, VA.) pitched the final two-plus innings.
Jimmy Miles (Orlando, FL.) scored the Monarchs first run as he stole second and came home on a Spider error. It was Miles 38th stolen base of the year which currently rankshim third nationally.
Senior Chris Keenan (Chesapeake, VA.) singled home Chris Buss (Rosemount, MD.) in the second inning and Bryan Cipolla's (Plainview, NY.) groundout plated Max Most (Port Washington, NY.) after Most led off with a triple in the third. ODU's Final run came in the fourth when Jimmy Miles singled in Chris Buss. Miles led ODU with two hits on the evening to raise his batting average to .374.
Richmond's Derek Boliek started the game off with a double, stole third and scored onHank Coogan's groundout to give the Spiders a 1-0 lead in the first. UR's second runcame in the seventh when Chris Cuppoia singled home Austin Reilly. Richmond stranded two runners in the seventh, eighth and ninth innings.
ODU travels to Wilmington, NC to play 26th ranked UNC Wilmington in the finalthree-game regular season CAA series. The CAA tournament begins in Wilmingtonon May 20th.
