WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (April 18, 2008) - Old Dominion University senior golfer Stan GuerreroWas named first team All-CAA and teammates Jeffrey Long and Eric Onesi were named secondTeam All-CAA selections.
Guerrero currently has a 73.2 stroke average this season. He placed third at Hartford, seventhAt VCU, fifth at ODU-Seascape and 12th last weekend at Palisades.
Eric Onesi, the CAA Rookie of the Year last season has a 73.6 stroke average. The Bear, DE.,Sophomore won the Mid Pines tournament in the fall, and took second at Duke. Long, a junior,Has a 73.3 stroke average as he finished 11th in Hawaii, tied for 19th at Wyoming and PalisadesAs well as Duke.
Georgia State senior Joel Sjoholm (Gothenburg, Sweden) was selected as the Colonial Athletic Association men's Golfer of the Year for the second straight season in a vote of the league's head coaches. Also earning top honors from the conference were UNC Wilmington freshman Josh Brock (Wilmington, N.C.) as CAA Rookie of the Year and VCU's Matt Ball as CAA Coach of the Year.
Sjoholm put together another sensational season for the Panthers and is currently ranked fifth in the nation in Division I. The senior compiled a league-low 70.97 stroke average this season and posted seven top-10 finishes, including individual titles at the 2007 Club Glove Intercollegiate and the 2008 John Hayt Collegiate. Sjoholm was recently named as one of 10 semifinalists for the Ben Hogan Award, which is given to the nation's top collegiate golfer.
Brock posted an impressive 74.7 stroke average, which was the lowest of any freshmen in the CAA. He recorded three top-20 finishes, including a second-place effort at the Cuthbert Cup in the spring opener. Brock fired a career-low round of 66 at the Turtle Bay Intercollegiate. He is the fourth UNCW player to earn CAA Rookie of the Year accolades.
Ball earned CAA men's Coach of the Year honors for the first time in his eight seasons as head coach of the Rams. VCU enters the CAA Championship ranked #93 in the nation after posting a second-place finish at the Palisades Intercollegiate in their regular-season finale. The Rams finished in the top 10 in six of their events this season.
The awards were presented Friday night following the first round of the 2008 CAA Men's Golf Championship, which resumes Saturday morning at the Golden Horseshoe in Williamsburg, Va.. The 54-hole championship concludes on Sunday.
After the first round of the CAA Championships, ODU is in fourth, justthree strokes behind the leads from Drexel. ODU shot a 291, while theDragons lead with a 288. Individually, Stan Guerrero leads ODU witha first round 71 and is tied for eighth. Seth Norman and John Murphy aretied for 11th with 73's.
