PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The Lady Monarchs (4-5/0-4) dropped to below .500 for the first time in 2007-08 with a 13-7 loss to the Drexel Dragons (10-5/2-3). Old Dominion got two-point efforts from for players, including a new career-high for sophomore Saratu Dodo. Senior Kelly Kimener, junior Jessica Noone and sophomore Ashley Kellogg were the others with points in the game. ODU returns home to face #9 North Carolina on Wednesday, April 16 with start time set for 3:00 p.m.
Senior Kaelyn Schival put Old Dominion up 1-0 on the quickest score of the season for the Lady Monarchs, as she was awarded a free position shot just 23 seconds into the game. The senior rifled it past the Drexel netminder, Lauren LaBella, for the score.
Drexel would then go on an 11-0 run in the first half, powered by seniors Katie Bradley and Gwenna Johnson. Bradley had two goals and two assists and Johnson notched a hat trick in the first half with three goals.
With just over four minutes remaining in the half, senior Kelly Kimener would make a move toward the goal and after a nifty spin move, found sophomore Ashley Kellogg streaking into the 8-meter for the score.
The goal scored with just over four minutes remaining in the first by Kellogg would spur a 6-2 run for ODU the rest of the way. Old Dominion would score the first two of the second half as junior attack Jessica Noone notched both scores. The first came off a free-position attempt and the second came off an assist by sophomore Saratu Dodo.
The Dragons stopped the ODU 3-0 run with a goal at the 16:37 mark as senior Jessica Bill got it past ODU senior keeper Sara Larson on a free-position attempt. It was one of only two scores in the half for the Dragons as Larson had an unbelievable frame in goal, facing 10 shots on-goal and saving eight of them.
Old Dominion scored three straight again, all on free-position attempts, to cut the lead to 12-7 with 1:35 remaining. Kellogg, Kimener and Dodo all scored on free-positions in the final 15 minutes.
The final tally would come as Drexel added a goal with four seconds remaining in the game from senior Nicole Adams. Seniors scored 10 of the 13 Drexel goals in the final home game of their careers.
The Dragons outshot ODU 46-18, as Drexel put up 46 shots for the second straight game. Sara Larson and D'Ana Goodfellow combined for 17 saves compared to LaBella's eight. Larson's 15 were a season-high.
Five of the seven goals for Old Dominion came on free-position attempts. As a team, they scored on 5-of-6 attempts. The Lady Monarchs were just 8-25 coming into the game on free-positions
The Lady Monarchs will host #9 North Carolina on Wednesday in their fourth game against a nationally ranked opponent in the last six games. The game will begin at Foreman Field at 3:00 p.m.
