ODU Defeats NSU, 11-5 For Sixth Straight Win

NORFOLK, VA--Old Dominion (10-4) pounded out 14 hits to defeat crosstown rivalNorfolk State (6-5), 11-5 Wednesday at the Bud Metheny Baseball Complex. ODU hasnow won six straight and seven of its last eight.

Trailing, 2-0 ODU rallied for five runs in the bottom of the first with consecutive RBIhits from Bryan Cipolla (Plainview, NY.), David Burns (Jacksonville, FL.), Jake McAloose (Virginia Beach, VA.) and Anthony Shawler (Chesapeake, VA.). Chris Buss(Rosemont, MN) also knocked in a run on a sacrifice fly.

Bryan Cipolla led the Monarchs with three hits, while Max Most (Port Washington, NY.), David Burns, Chris Buss and Gerard Hall (Washington, DC.) each had two hits.

Senior centerfielder Jimmy Miles (Orlando, FL.) , who leads the team with a .451batting average scored twice as did Most and Cipolla. Miles also stole two bases whichgives him 12 on the season.

Norfolk State was led by Chris Joyce with three hits on the day. He knocked in a runand scored twice. Brad Stephenson and Ryan Wiggins also knocked in a run each forthe Spartans.

ODU pitchers allowed just six hits on the day as senior lefthander David Wagner (Johnstown, PA.) picked up his first win of the year with 5.2 innings of work, striking out four. Redshirt freshman Robbie Watkins (Newport News, VA.) finished up in relief with four strikeouts.

The Monarchs return to CAA play with a three-game series in Williamsburg againstthe Tribe of William and Mary beginning Friday at 4 p.m.
