Buss and Miles Lead ODU Over VMI, 7-6

LEXINGTON, VA--Old Dominion (9-4) slammed three home runs and Cory Toth(Chincoteague, VA.) pitched three-plus innings of relief to help the Monarchs defeat VMI, 7-6 Tuesday afternoon. ODU has now won five straight and six of its last seven contests.

The Monarchs jumped out to a 6-1 lead after three innings. Designated hitter David Burns (Jacksonville, FL.) hit a solo shot, for his team leading fourth of the year. Anthony Shawler (Chesapeake, VA.) walked and Chris Buss (Rosemount, MN.) followed with a homerun to make it 3-0.

In the third inning Jimmy scored on a VMI fielding error, Jake McAlooose (Virginia Beach, Va.) singled home Burns and Buss singled home Shawler for a 6-0 lead. In the top of the sixth Miles hit a solo homer to make it 7-1

In the bottom of the seventh, VMI rallied for four runs highlighted by a three-run double by Tanner Biagini. Biagini also knocked in a run in the bottom of the eighth to cut the lead to 7-6.

ODU starter Dexter Carter (Murfreesboro, NC.) pitched five-plus innings with five strikeouts for his first win of the season. He started the game off by striking out the sidein the bottom of the first. Sophomore lefthander Cory Toth picked up his second save of the year with three-plus innings of relief. He fanned four and allowed one run.

Jimmy Miles, who batted .611 last week had three more hits in four at bats. Max Most, Jake McAloose and Chris Buss each had two hits, while David Burns, Anthony Shawler and Miles each scored twice. Buss led the Monarchs with three runs batted in.

CAA NOTE: Freshman catcher Edgar Hernandez (Luguillo, PR.) was named CAA Rookie of the Week Today. He hit .429 last week and threw out three of four batters in ODU's doubleheader sweep of Delaware.

The Monarchs return home to host the Spartans of Norfolk State Wednesday at 3 p.m.
