ODU Sweeps Doubleheader From Delaware, 3-2 and 9-8

NORFOLK, VA-- The ODU Baseball Monarchs swept the three-game CAA series from the Universityof Delaware by taking the Sunday doubleheader, 3-2 in game one behind the pitching of All-American AnthonyShawler and 9-8 behind the hitting of Bryan Cipolla. ODU is now 8-4 overall and 3-0 in the CAA. ODU has won fourstraight and five of its last six.

In the first game, Shawler pitched a complete game, allowing three hits, two runs with six strikeouts forhis second win of the season. The Fightin' Blue Hens scored in the third when Scott Shockley singled home RyanReed. ODU came right back as Max Most hit the fair pole for his first homer of the season with Jimmy Miles aboardto give ODU a 2-1 lead.

In the fifth Bryan Cipolla doubled home Jimmy Miles to make it 3-1 ODU. Delaware scored int he sixth as All-AmericanAlex Buchoholz sacrifice fly plated Kyle Davis.

In game two, ODU fought back to tie the game twice. In the fifth with UD leading 6-4, Anthony Shawler slammed hisfirst homer of the season with David Burns aboard. Delaware re-took the lead in the sixth a Matt Harded sacrificefly and double by Chris Nehl.

The Monarchs tied the game at 8-8 in the bottom of the sixth on Bryan Cipolla's ground out which plated JimmyMiles and David Burns ground out which scored Max Most.

ODU took the lead for good in the eighth on Bryan Cipolla's two-out single which scored Jimmy Miles.

Freshman lefthander Kyle Hald won his second collegiate game in relief. He pitched two-plus innings allowingtwo hits and striking out four. Delaware loaded the bases on him in the ninth and with two outs he got Josh Deanto ground out to end the game.

Jimmy Miles scored five times on the day for ODU, while Cipolla knockedin four runs. Freshman catcher Edgar Hernandez had three hits in game twoalong with Cipolla. Chris Keenan and Jimmy Miles each had two hits in gameone.

The Monarchs return to action on Tuesday when they travel to Lexington to take on VMI in a 4 p.m. contest, thenreturn home on Wednesday to play Norfolk State at 3 p.m.
